Are you suffering from knee pains? Well it might be from an injury to the bone or to the muscle, but whatever it might be it needs to be treated and taken care of properly. There are some things one needs to follow when suffering from a knee injury.
But first, it is important to understand that there are mainly broadly two types of injuries that people deal with – one which is long term and the other which is from an injury, the recovery period of which is comparatively much shorter. While some dos and don’ts for knee pain of both types overlap, there are some completely different approaches that one needs to take. So let us take a look at how to effectively take care of oneself when suffering from these two types of pains.
Long term knee joint pains
Most of the long term joint paints, especially in the knees are due to arthritis. Arthritis can set in various forms each with its own complications, but the knee pains are excruciating. While some days the pain will be under control, there will be days when you will not be able to move. In order to avoid the latter type of days, here are a few things that you can do:
- Make sure that you do physiotherapeutic exercises as advised by your physician on a daily basis. Even if you cannot afford a physiotherapist every day, sign up for these classes for a few days, learn the basic exercises and practise them at home regularly.
- Wear knee caps if you have constant knee joint pains. This will help you while walking and absorb the pressure, thus protecting the knee joints from the excess pressure of walking. Do not wear these at home or when you go to sleep since these are very tight and can lead to other problems.
- You need to make sure that you opt for regular hot and cold compresses. This helps in relaxing the tender and sore muscles of the knee joints which in turn will provide you with immediate comfort.
Short recovery period knee injuries
If you fall down and hurt your knee or injure in an accident, then here are some knee pain dos and don’ts that you can follow:
- Take proper rest at home for a few days after the injury at home. However that does not mean bed rest until and unless you have a broken or fractured knee. If it is a muscle injury, after two-three days, try to walk a little, take a few steps. This will prevent the muscles from becoming stiff and you will regain your normal stride easily.
- Go see a doctor and do the exercises as advised by her/him which will help you to get back on your knee.
- If you have suffered a cut in your knee, it might become infectious which will show up in the form of a fever and a red swollen knee. Rush to the doctor immediately!
